THSS (Tumut Home Support Services) provides support for those people who are struggling to maintain basic living standards in today's high cost of living. Specifically, pensioners who are trying to keep their diginity by not accepting charity but at the same time cannot afford trade prices in getting basic repairs done around their homes.
In contrast THSS service charges are based on expenses and a modest wage return.
THSS, under guidance, is developing a fully licensed, OH&S compliant and insurance covered business. We do not conflict with trade professionals as tasks are well below the profit threshold and/or technical expertise that define licensed tradesman (Fair-Trading 2008).
The idea is not new. South Australia's thrust towards home assistance for the aged and disadvantaged groups is called 'Home Assist'. Victoria is also gaining momentum assisting the aging population to stay in the comfort of their family homes longer.
Very much part of this service is friendly companion support, follow up caring and referral. An example of needed assistance can be demonstrated by a couple in Batlow where the male partner has recently had a stroke. They are finding it difficult to meet rental obligations in the context 'maintaining house and gardens'.
It is visualised that further casual support will be engaged as the business grows. Canberra had such a program during the 80's called 'The Grey Brigade'.
It is important for THSS to liaise regularly with community service organisations. Local Government, businesses, and Christian Associations so a best practiced client support can be delivered.
